As a young singer, I remember singing this text set by another composer and falling in love with Scottish poet, Robert Burn's sentimental poetry. For many years I carried the poetry with me until I was ready to set my own melody. With long luscious lines, this piece is very accessible to SATB and SSAA high school, collegiate, and community choirs. Enjoy the recording of my chamber choir (SATB) and of a wonderful singer and student, Sydney Lehner (SSAA).
Voicing: SSAA or SATB

Original SSAA demo
Ae fond kiss, and then we server,
Ae fare well, and then forever!
Deep in heartwrung tears I'll pledge thee
Warring signs and groans I'll wage thee.

Who shall say what Fortune grieves him
While the star of hope she leave him.
Me, nae cheerfu' twinkle lights me,
Dark despair around beknights me.

Had we ne'er loved sae kindly,
Had we ne'er loved sae blindly.
Never met or never parted
We had ne'er been broken hearted.

Fare thee weel, thou first and fairest,
Fare thee weel, thou best and dearest.
Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
peace, enjoyment, love, and pleasure!
